ABOUT THE SESSIONS
Beyond Surviving: Leading and Supervising for Maximum Results
Implementing Effective Supervision and Leadership in Human Services
Supervisors are made not born. Unfortunately, the supervisory crisis in the field of developmental disabilities and related services is largely self-made.
Employees typically arrive at provider agencies in entry-level positions with a minimum of knowledge, skills, and abilities relative to the field. We tend to promote from within, which on the surface, seems to make a great deal of sense. The staff, who the day before were working as part of a team, all of a sudden have supervisory responsibilities for the team. They have had no training, no preparation, and suddenly are thrust into a supervisory role that is foreign, confusing, and is fraught with danger.
Dual Diagnosis: Beyond the Hyphen
Designing, Developing, and Delivering Services and
Supports for People Who Have Intellectual Disabilities
and Mental or Behavioral Healthcare Needs
In this intensive one and a half day session we will examine the core elements necessary for those delivering services to successfully provide intensive community services and supports to people who have complex diagnoses. We will also examine the essential ingredients for failure, such as “abdication of responsibility” and “the diagnosis wars”. We will also review the keys to effective crisis services, including prevention, early intervention, and positive behavior supports.
The humorous style of the presentation will allow us to examine serious issues associated with the challenge of doing the right thing for the right reason. It will challenge you to stop trying to always push the envelope and what to do instead… such as considering setting the envelope on fire since most of what it holds are preconceptions, prejudices, and failures that result in our pasts determining our futures, and thus the futures of people who have significant disabilities.
